SOFIA CRESPO

Sofia María Crespo (1991) is an artist working on envisioning Artificial Life and generative lifeforms as a digital art practice. One of her main focal points is the way organic life uses artificial mechanisms to simulate itself and evolve. This implies the idea that technologies are a biased product of the organic life that created them and not a completely separated object. On the side, she is also hugely concerned with the dynamic change in the role of the artists working with machine learning techniques.

With an interest in the workings of the human brain, Crespo looks at the similarities between the techniques of AI image formation, and the way that humans express themselves creatively, and cognitively recognize their world.

Her works have been exhibited at festivals and institutions Kunstverein Hannover, Pompidou Center with Kadist (Paris), Nvidia’s GTC AI Gallery (San Francisco), Ars Electronica Gallery Spaces Garden (Linz), MAXXI (Rome), NXT Museum (Hong Kong), Photographer’s Gallery (London), and Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort). Crespo was Meta AI artist-in-residence in 2021, and TED speaker in 2022. Awards include the Falling Walls Award, and the AI Newcomer Award by the German Informatics Society.  Her works, both solo and through her duo practice Entangled Others, are part of various art collections such as the Buffalo AKG Museum (New York) and the Onassis Foundation (Athens).
